Review:

Can Mary Balogh ever do wrong? This is yet another jewel read in her arsenal! I was hooked from page one and simply LOVED this story! I nearly teared up a couple of times and that’s always a  sure sign a book has hit close to your heart! Loved the characters, the setting, the plot, the love story-This one was a real emotional ride!

Lily is an great heroine-She’s brave and strong and so much wiser than her years. I loved how fleshed out she was and you could really feel her light spreading to the others. It’s easy to see how Neville fell for her. I liked Neville, the hero, as well but he felt a bit bland and could have done with a bit more personality. That was one of the minuses for me. He was too much of a perfect cut-out of a typical romance hero. But Lily and some of the minor characters like Elizabeth, Neville’s aunt, made up for it.

The book was divided into parts and I thought this was a nice touch. I liked how the story started in the present before flashbacking to the past when Neville married Lily and watch her die. The romance was extremely touching. Neville wants Lily still after so many years and yet now so many obstacles lie between them, both psychologically and socially. Lily is a commoner and does not know the ways of Neville’s world, which is far above her own. She has also returned from being a prisoner of war and has scars of her own. Them trying to find their way to each other despite this totally tore at my heartstrings.

The plot was well-paced, and though at times the writing was a little repetitive, the best part of this book was the emotion in it. This was definitely a more character-driven novel. Though some modern readers may find the class difference not a good enough reason for Lily and Neville to be separated, I felt it suited the feel of that time period, though there was one part that I found a little over the top. Yet, despite these minor flaws, this book is still a winner on many levels!

I will end by saying once again how highly I recommend this book :) If you need a good, touching romance then pick this one up!

Sensuality Rating: Warm (Short and not explicit scenes)

Final Verdict: Brilliant! Add this to your must read list!

Kathryn Caskie’s Seven Deadly Sins Series

I love book series, especially ones that are joined together by one family (Mary Balogh’s Bedwyns, anyone?) because it gives you a chance to stay longer with characters after some of them have lived their happily ever after. There’s something comforting about visiting the same characters and the same world that you once read about.

Well, today I thought I would spotlight Kathryn Caskie’s series as it is based on a very intriguing premise-7 brothers and sisters, known as the Sinclairs, who each embody one of the seven deadly sins. I know, genius right?

The seven Sinclair brothers and sisters live for scandal and delight in disgrace . . . until their father decrees that they must reform.  Propriety has never come easily, but now they have no choice. Marry in haste…Or regret in poverty!

The first two books are out now and the third is coming out November 30th.

Book One: Greed

The Sinclairs of Scotland are known throughout society as The Seven Deadly Sins. Cast out by their father and denied their inheritance unless they mend their wild ways, they travel to London to seek respectability. No member of the clan is more scandalous than Sterling Sinclair, the Marquess of Blackburn. The ladies of the ton are powerless to withstand his rakish charms…until Miss Isobel Carington comes along.

Ten thousand pounds if she marries Sinclair!

Isobel is horrified to learn that’s the amount wagered at White’s Club— and now all of London is eagerly betting on her future! She’s already publicly spurned the Marquess, a man she hardly knows, but she’s sure he is up to something as he launches a bold campaign of seduction anyway. But soon she is surprised to learn there is much more to this man than reckless adventure and bad behavior… and, against her will, she begins to relish the thrill of sinning with this stranger…

Book Two: Envy

Lady Ivy Sinclair can’t live without funds much longer, so she vows to land a sensible, serious husband her father will accept. But just when the gentleman is about to pop the question, another woman snatches away his attentions. Furious, Ivy hatches a plan—make him jealous by hiring a handsome man to impersonate a marquess—a marquess who happens to be madly in love with her.

The moment Ivy boldly kisses Dominic Sheridan—to test his fitness for the task at hand—she’s sure he’s perfect. What Ivy doesn’t know is that the blue-eyed rake isn’t acting at all, but intent on seducing her into committing the most wicked of sins.

Lady Siusan Sinclair, unaccustomed to lifting a finger, suddenly becomes a rather famous working teacher for high-born young misses. The dashing new Duke of Exeter, unaccustomed to anyone naysaying him, suddenly finds he quite enjoys his daily clashes of wit with his ward’s outrageous teacher. Then suddenly, everyone is back to their proper place in Society, but no one is thinking very proper thoughts.

*This is Book One in the Scandal series*

Review:

OMG, I have been waiting for this book since forever! I knew it would be good, but I never expected it to be THIS good! Delilah has outdone herself with this one!

Seriously, from the moment I started it, I was hooked. The sexual tension is spot on, the chemistry is there, the dialogue is funny, the romance is simply heart wrenching and all in all this is a first-rate romance!

The Duke of Bradford has a secret obsession and this is the cause of the conflict of the novel. Bradford is an awesome hero! Even though he has to deal with a lot, he’s always there for our heroine, and my god, is he sexy! He’s exactly the tall, dark, brooding hero you want to read about!

Justine, the heroine, is the light to Bradford’s dark. She’s so unlike the typical women of the time and the perfect match for Bradford-I LOVE how she enters his house with a pistol to demand to see him. Her upbringing was unusual and this definitely shows through. She’s strong and determined and the perfect one to help Bradford with his obsession.

Justine’s father is making a case against the law that bans sodomy in England. This was interesting to read about. I must have mentioned it so many times already but for me, no historical romance is complete without adding historical facts and context. Delilah doesn’t disappoint here and I found it interesting to read about this topic.

The story has it’s dark elements but it also funny and fast-paced. Delilah has a very sexy sense of humor which I thoroughly enjoyed! ;)   I found it very hard to put this one down as the plot was continually pulling me into the story. The sexual tension was wired so tight, it was almost at breaking point and it was totally yummy and kept me hooked!

The series is tied together with a little red book known as How to Avoid the Scandal and the way it is used in this novel was hilarious. I love how every chapter starts with a tongue-in-cheek paragraph of advice from the book which turns out to be broken hehe. I can’t wait to read how it the book will be used in the next two books! :D (Strike that, I can’t wait to read the next two books, period!) It’s nearly impossible to find something wrong with this book because it was just so well-crafted! The characters were fleshed out, the chemistry was there, the plot was always intriguing.

So, a strong, sexy hero to die for, a heroine we’ll all like to be, oodles of sexual tension, lots of humor and a plot you just cannot get away from! What does this mean? A perfect historical romance!

Sensuality Level: Steamy (Explicit love scenes)

Final Verdict: Fantastic! Buy it, just buy it!

And the second book due out next year feature a duke who has been jilted, not once, but twice

Sneak Peek:

Being jilted. It’s awful for a guy.

Especially if you’re a duke, and your fiancée left you for that other duke, the one who came back from Egypt just before your wedding. Humiliating, right?

But what if you managed to recover, got engaged to another girl, and then got jilted again, this time because of a notorious woman, a lot of champagne, and a moment of utter stupidity? Well, that’s beyond humiliating. That’s a scandal.

Ah, but what if you manage to put the scandal behind you and begin searching for a new bride, only to have the notorious woman who ruined everything reenter your life? What if she’s as enticing as before? What if just being near her threatens to ruin your marriage prospects and your reputation all over again? For Aidan Carr, Duke of Trathen, the unluckiest man in England when it comes to matrimony, another scandal is the worst thing he can imagine. It might also be the best thing that ever happened to him.

Spotlight on Anne Gracie

I love it when a favourite author’s new book is released! Especially one as good as Anne Gracie who I discovered accidentally two years ago. Her romances are so well-written, you feel almost as if you really are there living out the characters’ lives! They’re romantic and heartfelt and can be real tear jerkers! Her chracters are real and fleshed out and her romances aren’t just focused on the romance alone as most are, but have lots of history strewn through. It’s a pity she doesn’t seem as well known as other authors.

I highly recommend you picking up a book or two of hers as you won’t be disappointed. The latest book (pictured at right) is the fourth in her Devil Riders series which concerns a group of friends just arrived back from war. What a lovely cover! This one concerns a friend of the Devil Riders known as Nash.

When Nash Renfrew wakes in the bed of lovely Maddy Woodford, he has no memory. In the days following his accident, he is charmed by her bright outlook on life, but he lives for the nights, when she joins him chastely-more or less-in her bed. When his memory returns, Nash asks for just one more night before he leaves. But it’s one night too many and it creates a scandal that leaves him no choice but to offer her marriage.
With five orphaned half-siblings in her charge, Maddy needs the security Nash offers and can’t resist the promise of passion she’s experienced in his embrace. Well born, but poverty-stricken, Maddy knows she’s not the wife he planned on, but he’s everything she’s ever dreamed of.
But will passion be enough? He’s a diplomat who knows Czars and Princes and Grand-dukes and she’s just a country girl who’s never even been to a ball.
Can their new-found love survive, or will this accidental marriage destroy her dreams and his career?

Due out-October 5th 2010

Spotlight on Tessa Dare-SUMMER READS

It’s summer timeeeee! :D :D :D

And for most people that means sun, beaches, tanning, hot shirtless men… :D

Alas, for me, that means packing and moving to Malaysia to prepare for my first year of university. The romance addict will be around, she will have just changed her mailbox address!

And I suppose it’s rather exciting going to be able to leave on my own and get a part time job and study things I actually like for once! (Sorry my dear math teacher-I did appreciate your efforts to infuse a love for the subject into me)

One thing that won’t change however, is my love of romance novels. In fact, I already have a huge pile waiting to be shipped off to Malaysia with me and a few novels I’m going to be looking out for once I’m there.

The first ones on my list?

Tessa Dare’s new back-to-back trilogy-The Stud Club.

In Tessa’s words—

“An all-new historical romance back-to-back series, The Stud Club Trilogy. The heroes—a duke, a war hero, and a low-born scoundrel—hold shares in a priceless racehorse. When the club’s founder is tragically murdered, these three unlikely associates are united by chance, divided by suspicion, and brought to their knees by love.”

This is a series of three books one after another with one already out in May and two more out this June and July. Now that’s a great way to spend a summer! And it gets better-Her covers are super delicious. Check them out below…

ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE—May 25th 2010

True temptation begins at midnight…

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members — yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke — until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE—June 22nd 2010

How long could she resist him?

Luck is a double-edged sword for brooding war hero Rhys St. Maur. His death wish went unanswered on the battlefield, while fate allowed the murder of his friend in the elite gentlemen’s society known as the Stud Club. Out of options, Rhys returns to his ancestral home on the moors of Devonshire, expecting anything but a chance at redemption in the arms of a beautiful innkeeper, who dares him to take on the demons of his past — and the sweet temptation of a woman’s love.

Meredith Maddox believes in hard work, not fate, and romance isn’t part of her plan. But when Rhys returns, battle-scarred, world-weary, and more dangerously attractive than ever, the lovely widow is torn between determination and desire. As a deep mystery and dangerous smugglers threaten much more than their passionate reckoning, Meredith discovers that she must trust everything to a wager her heart placed long ago.

THREE NIGHTS WITH A SCOUNDREL—July 27th 2010

The third time is the charm.

The bastard son of a nobleman, Julian Bellamy is now polished to perfection, enthralling the ton with wit and charm while clandestinely plotting to ruin the lords, ravish the ladies, and have the last laugh on a society that once spurned him. But meeting Leo Chatwick, a decent man and founder of the exclusive Stud Club, and Lily, Leo’s enchanting sister, made Julian reconsider his wild ways. When Leo’s tragic murder demands that Julian hunt for justice, he vows to see the woman he secretly loves married to a man of her own class.

Lily, however, has a very different husband in mind. She’s adored Julian forever, loves the man beneath the rakish facade, and wants to savor the delicious attraction they share — as his wife. His insistence on marrying her off only reinforces her intent to prove he is the only man for her. Obsessed with catching a killer, Julian sinks back to the gutters of his youth, forcing Lily to reach out with a sweet, reckless passion Julian can’t resist. Can her desire for a scoundrel save them both–or will dangerous secrets threaten more than their tender love?

The first one being out and summer already underway, it’s great to know that there are another two books to look forward too! I will be getting my copies and posting my reviews on here ASAP!

They find themselves facing slanderous whispers, unscrupulous relatives—not to speak of their own simmering passions, which quickly ignite into dangerous flames. It’s a potent mix and the result may be explosive—and perhaps deadly—if they don’t watch their step.

Review:

Sexy, sweet, romantic, witty and hilarious, this is one book not to be missed! It was a great and refreshing change from all the usual sex-obsessed romance novels. I appreciated the fact that the hero and the heroine didn’t feel the need to jump into bed right away which afforded the reader (me!) to enjoy great witty banter and hot sexual tension. :P

Both the hero and heroine were awesome lovable characters. I liked Ciara right away, mainly because she was so easy to relate to, dealing with horrible rumors. She was also a strong character, who was willing to do whatever it took to protect her son. I liked how she didn’t succumb right away to the charms of the devilish Lord Hadley, like other heroines seemed to do. It fit well with her rational, serious, focused-on-her-work persona and was a nice change. Sometimes I find myself rolling my eyes at how quickly heroines who say they will never fall for the charms of Mr so-and-so end up in bed with him not too long after.

I knew Lord Hadley, despite all the rumors to the contrary, was a an good man almost right away. We hear about his exploits in the paper Ciara reads at the beginning of the book but later when we first meet him, we see that Hadley is a man who is already wondering at his shallow existence, proving that there is more to him than meets the eye. I loved how the author gradually revealed the deeper layers of the man until I along with the heroine was totally in love with him!

This story was also the perfect opposites attract story. Being a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, the whole we’re-opposites-and-that-means-we-can-teach-each other-things is completely up my alley. Relationships are about learning new things from your partner while staying true to yourself.

The charcters were complete opposites at first but then gradually we can see how perfect they are for each other.

The pacing of the romance was perfect and I loved watching them fall in love before anything too scandalous happened ;)

Another great thing about this book was the conversations. I loved how witty they were and laughed more than once at the cleverness of the dialogue. Very Austen-esque.

The extra characters were wonderful and really fleshed out. I could completely imagine them saying what they said and acting how they did. The scenes were touching and realistic and I absolutely loved the scenes with Ciara’s son and Lord Hadley.

The only thing that may have kept it a bit down for me was that it wasn’t very adventurous in terms of plot. It was a great fresh telling of the opposites attract story and I suppose this is my veteran romance reader self talking but I would have preferred if the story had happened on more of a larger scale.

I still can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Sensuality Level: Warm (Few love scenes but GREAT tension and chemistry)

Verdict: Very witty and romantic-This is one for the hopeless romantic in all of us! Buy it for a great, feel-good read :)

Rating: 4 and a half out of 5 stars
