One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean

One Good Earl Deserves a LoverSetting: Regency

Summary:

Lady Philippa Marbury is…odd.

The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She’s looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest–fourteen days to research the exciting parts of life. It’s not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London’s darker corners.

She needs…a Scoundrel.

She needs Cross, the clever, controlled partner in London’s most exclusive gaming hell, with a carefully crafted reputation for wickedness. But reputations often hide the darkest secrets, and when the unconventional Pippa boldly propositions him, seeking science without emotion, she threatens all he works to protect. He is tempted to give Pippa precisely what she wants…but the scoundrel is more than he seems, and it will take every ounce of willpower to resist giving the lady more than she ever imagined.

Review:

I love Sarah MacLean. All her books thus have been sexy, witty, and surprisingly fresh in a genre that can seem very predictable at times. But I never expected how much I would love this book. To be honest, I came into this book with a lot misapprehensions because I thought the way that Philippa and Cross got thrown together was a bit cliche (Philippa’s sister and Cross’s friend are the heroes of the first book in the series) and I couldn’t really see how they would suit each other. A cold, calculating, rakish, gaming hell partner with a socially awkward bluestocking who wears glasses? Not really an ideal match at all!

But I should never have doubted Sarah MacLean’s talent for creating emotionally poignant stories with characters that have so many layers and who slowly reveal themselves to be so perfect for each other, you should never have doubted it in the first place. At least that was the case for me!

This was an amazing book and this was clearly one of Ms. MacLean’s favourites to write because of the amount of thought and downright awesome-ness that was just packed into it. The story was so well paced and flowed so well and yet managed to be unpredictable and fresh at the same time.  I loved the way it was written and I honestly had the hardest time putting this down!

Despite not warming to Philippa in the last book when she introduced, I grew to adore this determined, logically based young woman. Sure she can be immature and naive sometimes but that’s part of the reason she is so endearing to the reader. And don’t get me started on Cross who turned out to be one of my biggest romance hero crushes ever! You gotta love a guy who has a thing for the wallflower 😛 I simply adored their scenes together and their love scenes literally had me fanning myself, they were sizzling with tension! I love how they didn’t jump right into bed either but held back-makes it all so much more exciting to read!

To sum it all up: A great plot with great characters and a romance you won’t soon forget! This is definitely one of my top picks for this year! Well done Sarah! Can’t wait for your next book! 😀

Sensuality Rating: Pretty hot (4/5)

Verdict: Just read it! You won’t regret this one!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Review:

You know those romances that feature intriguing secondary characters from previous romances? Well, this is one of those books which takes two characters we love from previous books and gives them their own romance. Surprisingly, I wasn’t even looking forward to this one because the premise didn’t stand out much to me and I thought the hero and heroine were ill matched but I ended up loving it! This one was a surprise success!

What do you get when you put an intelligent, outspoken bluestocking and a titled, seemingly dumb hero together? Alot of sparks-both good and bad! Fans of her last books know the hero and heroine as constantly arguing with each other and generally not getting along! They seem like they have nothing in common so it was quite surprising to see them paired up in this book and I had doubts whether they would make a good match.

But Miranda does an amazing job of revealing deeper layers to both characters and showing us just how well they suit each other. The hero has a surprising secret that will endear him to readers who previously disliked him and Minerva is delightful with her bold, daring character even though she can be quite immature and impulsive at times. Their romance is full of unexpected sparks that remind one of Lizzy and Darcy type romance.

The writing is wonderful-warm, fast-paced with just a sprinkle of wit and humor thrown in. The plot may seem basic enough-guy compromises girl accidentally and they end up in an arranged marriage and of course end up falling in love but Miranda makes her characters so entertaining and real, that it becomes a joy to read! Fans will enjoy revisiting the other couples from the last books and new readers will need to pick up the rest of this wonderful series!

Another wonderful romance from the very talented Miranda Neville! Can’t wait to read her next!

Sensuality Rating: Pretty sensual (3/5)

Verdict: Wonderful opposites attract romance!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The Handbook

Nate Stokes, Earl of Westfall, is a supremely accomplished former spy more at home on London’s seedy streets than in any glittery ballroom. His peers know him only as a bookish fellow who can find anything—or anyone. When the Marquis of Ebberling hires him to find a murderess, Nate’s search leads him to the Tantalus Club and Emily Portsman. In a game where no one is who they seem and when every conversation is a deadly dance of trust and desire, the only thing Nate knows for sure is that once he gets Emily in his arms, he will never let go…

Enjoy the exclusive sneak peek! 😀

1) Out January 1

Waking Up With a Rake

Click on cover for more info!

Summary:

The Fate of England’s Monarchy Is In The Hands of Three Notorious Rakes.

To prevent three royal dukes from marrying their way onto the throne, heroic, selfless agents for the crown will be dispatched…to seduce the dukes’ intended brides. These wickedly debauched rakes will rumple sheets and cause a scandal. But they just might fall into their own trap…

After he’s blamed for a botched assignment during war, former cavalry officer Rhys Warrick turns his back on “honor.” He spends his nights in brothels doing his best to live down to the expectations of his disapproving family. But one last mission could restore the reputation he’s so thoroughly sullied. All he has to do is seduce and ruin Miss Olivia Symon and his military record will be cleared. For a man with Rhys’s reputation, ravishing the delectably innocent miss should be easy. But Olivia’s honesty and bold curiosity stir more than Rhys’s desire. Suddenly the heart he thought he left on the battlefield is about to surrender…

Why you should read it:

This is the first in a brand new series with a premise that’s fresh, intriguing and based on a real piece of history! And who doesn’t love a redeemed rake plot? 😉 Plus, books penned by two authors are rare because of the difficulty involved in merging two distinct voices into one but if done correctly could result in something really outstanding. After all, two heads are better than one no?

Why you should read it:

This is the first proper historical after Celeste’s last series, so those of you who haven’t caught up with her last series can have a chance to experience her hilarious, spicy and deeply romantic stories. Seriously, if you haven’t read Celeste Bradley yet, this would be a good place to start-there’s nothing like a good rake and sheltered miss story, only this time the twist is that she’s a thief  which should be extra interesting to read.

Why you should read it:

Teresa’a last book before this was set in the exciting locale of Turkey and the secondary character who got jilted is the hero in this one. There’s nothing like a romance for a character who recently missed out on theirs in a previous book and Max will prove to be an interesting hero as it’s normally the women who get jilted and instead of moping about it, he’s decided to go bad. It’s worth reading to see how that plays out for him.

Why you should read it:

Ever since Sarah MacLean burst on the scene with her Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (seriously, how can you go wrong with a title like that?), she’s been topping the romance bestseller lists with her funny, deeply emotional, character driven romances. Think Anna Campbell but much lighter. This installment the second in her exciting new series about four men who own a gaming hell gives more insights into a place rarely explored in the romance genre-the seedy underbelly of London, far removed from the gentle afternoon tea settings of most Regencies. Besides, the hero is the quiet but deadly kind so expect some exciting revelations. And of course the heroine is a bluestocking which should make for a great opposites attract romance. 🙂

Debut author

Summary:

SOME RULES SIMPLY BEG TO BE BROKEN

A dressmaker in London’s busiest shop, Miss Anabelle Honeycote overhears the ton’s steamiest secrets—and (occasionally) uses them to her advantage. It isn’t something she’s proud of, but the reluctant blackmailer needs the money to care for her gravely ill mother. To make up for her misdeeds, Anabelle keeps to a firm set of rules:

  1. Never request payment from someone who cannot afford it.
  2. Never reveal the secrets of a paying client.
  3. Never enter into any form of social interaction with a client.

Her list keeps her (somewhat) honest—until she encounters Owen Sherbourne, the Duke of Huntford. Not only does Owen nip Anabelle’s extortion plans in the bud, the devilishly handsome Duke soon has the sexy seamstress dreaming of more than silks and satins. Owen’s searing kisses carry the promise of passion, but how will he react when Anabelle’s most devastating secret is finally revealed?

Why you should read it:

Debut romances are always worth reading in their own right but one where the heroine is a dressmaker and not a lady are rare. Particularly if it involves a dressmaker who knows all the dirty secrets of the ton. This should prove to be an interesting forbidden romance plot and the book has already won awards and been given a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly who called it a story ‘demanding to be read.’

The Autumn Bride

Book 1 in Chance Sisters series

Summary:

Instead of treasures, though, she finds the owner, Lady Beatrice Davenham, bedridden and neglected. Appalled, Abby rousts Lady Beatrice’s predatory servants and—with Lady Beatrice’s eager cooperation—the four young ladies become her “nieces,” neatly eliminating the threat of disaster for all concerned!

It’s the perfect situation, until Lady Beatrice’s dashing and arrogant nephew, Max, Lord Davenham, returns from the Orient—and discovers an impostor running his household…

A romantic entanglement was never the plan for these stubborn, passionate opponents—but falling in love may be as inevitable as the falling of autumn leaves…

Why you should read it:

Anne Gracie is a well known author in the romance world and with her new series she’s set to make more fans. Four poor sisters who suddenly come into a great fortune might sound familar but Anne Gracie has a knack for making familiar romance tropes become something fresh and new. Give it a try when it comes out next year.

The Arrangement

Click cover for more info on author!

Summary:

Desperate to escape his mother’s matchmaking, Vincent Hunt, Lord Darleigh, flees with his valet. Blinded by a cannon blast on the Napoleonic battlefields, Vincent needs time alone to heal and reflect but anonymity proves impossible and soon another marital trap is sprung. Luckily, he is saved in time by a stranger with a captivating voice that stirs something deep inside. He may be blind but he can see a solution to both their problems: marriage. Yet he never imagined a wedding of convenience would open his heart to a love he never expected.

Quiet, unassuming Sophia may be invisible to nearly everyone, but even she isn’t going to stay silent when an unsuspecting gentleman is about to be trapped into marriage. But when such a gloriously handsome and heartbreakingly vulnerable man persuades her that he needs a wife of his own choosing as much as she needs protection from destitution, she agrees. Her alternative is too dreadful to contemplate.

As they conspire to help each other find a new place in the world, friendship and camaraderie lead to sweet seduction and erotic pleasure. Dare they believe a bargain born of desperation might lead them both to a love destined to be?

Why you should read it:

Apart from the obvious loveliness of the book cover, well first of all, the hero is blind and that is a novelty and then it’s MARY BALOGH, whose books are simply amazing. It’s worth reading just to see how she tackles a blind hero. Looks like it’ll be a tear jerker so get your tissues ready!

And other books without covers that have just been announced:

1) Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare

Out May 28

Summary:

Griffin York, the Duke of Halford, has no desire to wed this season—or any season—but his diabolical mother abducts him to “Spinster Cove” and insists he select a bride from the ladies in residence. Griff decides to teach her a lesson that will end the marriage debate forever. He chooses the serving girl.

Overworked and struggling, Pauline Simms doesn’t dream about dukes. All she wants is to hang up her barmaid apron and open a bookshop. That dream becomes a possibility when an arrogant, sinfully attractive duke offers her a small fortune for a week’s employment. Her duties are simple: submit to his mother’s “duchess training”… and fail miserably.

But in London, Pauline isn’t a miserable failure. She’s a brave, quick-witted, beguiling failure—a woman who ignites Griff’s desire and soothes the darkness in his soul. Keeping Pauline by his side won’t be easy. Even if Society could accept a serving girl duchess—can a roguish duke convince a serving girl to trust him with her heart?

Why:

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story and this one looks particularly good. An independent servant girl who doesn’t dream of being a rich man’s wife who will take the ton by storm is a novelty indeed.

***

2) Once Upon a Tower by Eloisa James

Out May 28

Why:

The latest in Eloisa’s Fairy Tale series: No word on summary yet but this is probably based on the classic fairytale Rapenzel judging from the title. Eloisa’s always good and her fairytale updates have all been brilliant so far (my favourite is the Beauty and the Beast one) and it’ll be intriguing to see how she’s going to adapt a heroine with l0oong hair, trapped in a castle her whole life, into the very real, magic-less world of the Regency era.

***

3) Vixen in Velvet by Loretta Chase

Out August 27

Why:

Also no summary but this is the final book in Loretta’s amazing Dressmakers series which features 3 sisters who make their living off their beautiful creations. Sisters Marcelline and Sophia have stolen the hearts of lords too far above them in the last 2 books and now it’s youngest sister Leonie’s turn to find her true love. Scandal, sparks and sexy lords await! It’ll be nice to see how Loretta rounds everything off but I think I’ll miss the Noirot sisters.
