Cosmo’s 7 Secret Signs V.S. The Average HR Hero

I recently read Cosmo’s Secret Signs He’s Amazing in Bed (yes, even an old-fashioned gal like myself needs to keep up with the modern ways of the world ;P ), enjoyed it and then came up with a fun idea!

What if one were to take the average Historical Romance Hero and pit him against the criteria of this list? How would he fare? Have our favorite authors nailed the secret to how good these men are in bed?

Well, let’s have a look, shall we? 😉

Number One: Number one on the list states that you’ll know he’s good if he knows his way around a guitar, or is into music or art (the so-called ‘geeky’ activities). Well.  Seeing as the guitar wasn’t even invented back in the 1700/1800’s, that’s a no go. However, pianos did abound and music and art were definitely in their prime! What’s more it was considered ‘feminine’ to pursue such activities. A man was thought to enjoy more masculine things like hunting and fencing. Hmmm, well I can definitely think of at least one hero who fits that criteria! Jocelyn Dudley, the Duke of Tresham (from Mary Balogh’s More Than a Mistress) is man who appears cold and ruthless but then secretly harbors a gift for playing the piano. Course no one knows about this until the heroine uncovers his secret. So I guess that makes number one a YES.

Number Two: Number two says focus on the way he eats, as that’ll say a lot about his nature in the bedroom-If he gobbles it down quickly, you’ll know he’s all about instant gratification in the bedroom. Hmmm, well the Earl of Storrington from Miranda Neville’s Never Resist Temptation definitely enjoyed his food and took his time-ah, savoring it, **cough cough** Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve read a hero who isn’t about taking his time with food and not golfing it all down. Guess that makes this one a YES.

Number Three: Number three says he’s better in bed if he has a bigger salary. Well, that’s an obvious one. The average HR hero is usually an earl, a marquess or a duke which means piles of cash and at least two big houses, tons of servants, not to mention acres of farmland which is their main source of their wealth. So this one’s definitely a big, fat wad of YES.

Number Four: This one talks about the body of a man. Well, he’s gotta be fit in order to do the job right? It even states that if he’s larger than most men, it’s a good sign-as it means more endorphins. Again, obvious. Everytime the heroine meets her man, there are all these descriptions like his firm, muscular body, his broad shoulders, his intimating height, etc… God, I could go on but then well never get to the end 😉 So, YES again.

Number Five: Confidence is key. Again, obvious. There hasn’t been ONE hero who isn’t confident, usually to the point of arrogance (Mr. Darcy, any one?)-I mean it’s always ‘he had a sureness about him’, ‘he seemed so comfortable in his skin’, ya da ya da ya! YES again!

Number Six: If he’s open about his feelings for you right away, it’ll be easier when you’re intimate. Well, hell, that’s dead obvious too. Remember how our confident, smooth hero tells a lady exactly what he thinks about her? You know the part that makes you shiver cause he’s being too darned sexy in telling the heroine how he feels about her? So this one’s definitely another YES.

Number Seven: Last one says nice guys are better in bed. Hmmm, now this one is a toughie. Considering that 99.9% of all HR heroes are rakes with unsavory reputations (who are, naturally, talented in bedroom activities), how on earth can this be true? But then again, isn’t the hero always in some way misunderstood and not really as rakish or as devilish as he appears? And don’ they always end up changing for the women they love? Take this example-Lucas Hadley from Cara Elliot’s Sin with a Scoundrel, is a rake but is also deep down more than just another pleasure seeker. Not to mention the fact that despite these heroes being rakes, they always treat their partners well in bed-and never take more than they get. So, maybe they’re not nice in the traditional sense but they are nice to the women they love! So, I would say YES!

Conclusion: Well, bless my soul, it seems that our favorite authors really do know what makes a skilled man a skilled man! Seems like the HR heroes really do live up to their rep as awesome guys in bed. Glad to know that there was some truth in them and they weren’t complete fantasies for us women 😉

Voting still open!

Hey guys,

Thanks for voting on my poll! So far, it looks like Sarah’s in the lead. If you haven’t voted yet, please do! The poll will be open until the end of October!

Dying of Anticipation-A Raving Post!

Hey guys,

Judging by the results of the poll I posted up, I’m not the only one who’s waiting on tenterhooks for the amazing Sarah Maclean’s new novel to arrive. Yes, I realize that I have already done an anticipation post for her but as the day grows nearer, my excitement grows so bear with me 😉 The novel features the devilish and brooding Gabriel’s twin brother Nicholas who is definitely a major hearthrob in his own right. I’ve recently become addicted to the ‘good hero’ and Nicholas sounds exactly like the kind of guy I LOVE to read about!I’m sure you’ll all agree with me 😛

Sadly I will not be able to get the novel as soon as it comes out as the place I’m living in now doesn’t have that kind of availability. 😦 Rather tragic, really.

However, that doesn’t mean that you guys should suffer for my loss and so with it is my extreme pleasure to present a sneak peek of the new novel due out October 26th

From Sarah’s own website…

Ten Ways… begins with the following passage from a ladies’ magazine:

It cannot be denied that there is a veritable epidemic spreading among the young ladies of London—a tragic reality that ends in nothing but the very worst possible scenario.

We refer, of course, to spinsterhood.

With so many unmarried ladies in our fair city so unfortunately shaded from the brilliant sunshine of wedded bliss, tis nothing short of criminal that these promising young buds might never have the opportunity to blossom!

And so, Dear Reader, it is in the interest of public service that we have compiled a list of time-tested solutions, oft-proven to simplify the most daunting of tasks—that of securing a husband.

We humbly present, Lessons in Landing a Lord.

– Pearls and Pelisses
June 1823

And poor, poor Nick…Guess who is named the first of the magazine’s Lords to Land? You guessed it.  And because you guessed it, I give you the first line of Chapter One:

When the blonde by the door winked at him, it was the very last straw.

Thank you Sarah! Now if that didn’t get you excited, what are you doing on this site anyway? 😉

Sex and the Austen Girl

Hey guys!

Just thought I would introduce you all to a new web show in case you haven’t heard of it. Here at Historical Romance Addicts, we love Jane Austen-I mean it’s very possible Historical Romance wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for her influence!

This fun and quirky web show features two women who have swapped lives, a concept similar to that of the hit TV show, Lost in Austen. It’s based off the bestselling books Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict and Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict. Each 3 minute webisode features a debate on a topic and whether we have it better now or back then in the 1800’s. (Note: It doesn’t matter what century you come from, men will always be a mystery!) The episodes end with a quote from one of Austen’s novel which is great for us Janeites 😉

If you’re a historical buff, you should defnitely check this out as you’ll learn loads of interesting tidbits about life in Regency England. And if you love it and can’t get enough, you could always buy the books!

Check out the show-http://www.babelgum.com/sexandtheaustengirl (There are currently 15 episodes)

Kiss Me-A Period Drama Fan Vid

Hey guys,

Ok, I’m going to be a bit selfish now and do some self-promoting, while of course, holding your best interests at heart 😉

Long ago, I made this video to the song Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer featuring all my favourite period drama kisses. It’s still one of my personal favourites among all the videos I’ve made and I thought I would share it with you guys!

Enjoy!

Movie Rave: The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant

I remember seeing clips of this movie wayyyy back in 2006 on the Hallmark Channel and have been meaning to watch the whole thing. I recently developed a love for Romola Garai who I had seen perform marvelously in other period dramas, like Daniel Deronda, Angel and Emma.

When I got to watch this movie at last, I was so happy I did. It is seriously one of the best period dramas/historical adventure movies I have ever seen. I was literally GLUED to my seat, so into the story I didn’t take note of the time! I think it was also because the movie itself was so fast-paced, it didn’t leave time for the viewer to relax! Romola outdoes herself here as a young English convict who would do anything to be free. The story is based on true events and revolves around her attempt to escape from her prison on what would later be Australia.

The acting overall was brilliant, the settings were beautiful and realistic, the story was unpredictable and intriguing, but I have to say the best part of the whole show was Jack Davenport who plays a British naval officer who Mary uses to escape. He did a brilliant job acting as the man who falls for Mary and wants to help her despite her being ‘the enemy’ so to speak. I felt so bad for him and was just so hooked on his complicated character. I really wanted him and Mary to end up together.

The story was also very inspiring as we discover at the start that Romola’s character wasn’t a villain and was just doing whatever she could to survive harsh circumstances. Her determiniation to survive was inspring and although I didn’t agree with some of the things she did, she would never have survived if she hadn’t. She was really someone who did whatever it took and it led to her finally escaping!

Overall, this was an amazing drama, truly top-notch. I’m not sure how accurate the story was, but it was so well-told, I couldn’t help but love it. It stayed with me long after I saw it and I’m dying to see it once more! If you ever get the chance to watch this, do! You won’t regret it!

Historical Drama Rating: 5 out 5!

Sexiness Rating: 5 out 5-Seriously, with the two leading men being Jack Davenport and Alex O’Loughlin, how can you go wrong? (And guys, Romola Garai is simply lovely here :P)

Change of Site Name and Look

Hey guys!

You all have probably noticed the change in my site name and look and that has to do with the fact that I wanted this blog to be less about me and more about you guys, the readers! I’m thinking about opening another blog that will be more personal but for now, this blog will be focused on our favorite addiction-historical romances! I felt that the term ‘romance novel addict’ was too broad and this blog only deals with a specific sub-genre. I think this new name will help that focus and give this blog less of a personal meaning. The look came about as I felt the last site looked too serious-This new site theme seemed more relaxed and playful 😀

Keep checking back for new posts! Love you guys 🙂

Trailer for the new Harry Potter movie!

Hey guys!

I am so beyond excited right now for the new Harry Potter movie due out November 19th! Yeeee! It just looks epic and I’m glad they’re splitting it up as they will finally be able to do the book justice 🙂 This is a movie you must add on your ‘too watch’ lists-It’s just plain EPIC.

Check out the trailer below-

Disney’s Tangled!

Hey guys,

I got to say I love Disney movies, and by Disney movies I mean the animated ones, not the mostly crappy, badly acted live action movies that pop out of the Disney teen star making machine like pimples -_-

I’m talking about the ones that are well-plotted, actually funny, and really mean something! I mean what’s not to like about feel-good movies that end happily, don’t involve gratuitous amounts of sex and violence and actually teach you something worth while? The last Disney movie I saw was The Princess and the Frog and omg, but it was brilliant! With the advent of the 3-D revolution, Disney is taking their movies to the next level, which is sad as 2-D is what Disney does best. I admit I had serious doubts about the new movie that is due out this November-A Disney animated movie NOT in classic 2-D? Could this be anything but a flop?

I’m happy to say that after having seen the trailer for Tangled (a movie based on Rapunzel), that my fears have lessened a lot. This looks like good Disney fare and with a fresh twist even. The hero is spunky and funny and isn’t a prince which is fresh and the story looks like a fun ride 😀 Though the heroine seems a bit too ditzy, I have faith that Disney will make her completely lovable!

Check out the new trailer below-I am so psyched for November now!
